UPSI

First national museum of education opens

2011/07/19

TANJUNG MALIM: The Bangunan Suluh Budiman at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) built in 1919 has been upgraded to become the first national museum of education in the country.

Completed with an allocation of RM9.8 million from the Higher Education
Ministry, it was officially opened today by the Raja Permaisuri of Perak Tuanku
Bainun.

Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir in his address during
the opening of the museum said the choice of the building was historically appropriate considering that UPSI was where national education mainly developed.

"UPSI was formerly Sultan Idris Training College and has produced many
education notables and leaders such as Tun Ghafar Baba and Tan Sri Awang Had

Salleh.

"The state government is confident that this museum which can be regarded as

an education par excellence landmark will be a treasury of reference of the
country's educational history," he said.

UPSI Vice Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Aminah Ayob said the university building
was gazetted as a national heritage on Nov 12, 2009 for its historical
significance in the development of teaching and education in the country.

The museum consists of 19 galleries, two reading rooms while reference material can be accessed through the computer system.

The facility also has a digital system to enable it to upload gallery material onto its website. - Bernama
