KEPALA BATAS: Allianze University College of Medical Sciences (AUCMS) will be opening a geriatric centre which specialises in health care for the elderly at Darul Hanan Old Folks Home, here.

Its president Datuk Dr Zainuddin Md Wazir said the centre, a collaboration between the Penang Islamic Religious Council (Maipp) and the home, was expected to be completed by early next year.

"The geriatrics centre will focus on daily health care and treatment for elderly folk in the home. It will also treat senior citizens who are not from the home," he said at the college's buka puasa treat last Wednesday.

Present were Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas and wife Toh Puan Majimor Shariff, the Raja Muda of Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail and Raja Puan Muda Perlis Tuanku Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil.

Dr Zainuddin said the college had initiated a corporate social responsibility project by offering free tuition to SPM students in Seberang Perai.

He said more than 10 schools have participated in the programme involving 30 teachers from AUCMS.

"For a start, we are focusing on core subjects such as Science, Maths and English and we hope to improve the students' results," he said.
