USM signs MoU with local, Filipino varsities

UNIVERSITI Sains Malaysia (USM) has signed memorandums of understanding (MoU) with a new Malaysian university and a long estab-lished university from the Philippines to establish co-operation and sharing of expertise and resources.
The MoU with the National Defence Uni-versity of Malaysia (UPNM) is to share expe-riences on administration, management and human capital.
USM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dzulkifli Abdul Razak and UPNM vice-chancellor Lt-Jen Datuk Ismail Samion were the signatories.
UPNM was established a year ago to replace the Malaysian Armed Forces Academy (ATMA) that had been in operation for 11 years.
It offers degrees in nautical science, aeronautical science, information technology and armed forces’ security, science and maritime technology, defence studies, defence resources management, armed forces management and leadership, and engineering.
The pact with De La Salle University, the Philippines (DLSUP), signed by Prof Dzulkifli and DLSUP vice-chancellor for academics Julius Maridable, will establish a framework for educational and research cooperation for students, faculty and research staff.
Prof Dzulkifli also announced the appointment of Prof Ahmad Shukri Mustafa Kamal, who was previously USM Institute of Graduate Studies dean, as USM deputy vice-chancellor for academic and international affairs for three years beginning Sept 15.
In line with USM’s research university status, Prof Lim Koon Ong has been appointed USM deputy vice-chancellor for industry and community network until Aug 30, 2010.
